Lately, I have been arranging songs that I consider to be important and that are, in my opinion, songs that have stood the test of time, appeal to many different people, and are songs that can be used in many situations.
This soulful, longing tune was written by Calvin Lewis and Andrew Wright. Many performers have recorded this song: Percy Sledge, Bette Midler, and Michael Bolton all had #1 hits with this song. The Percy Sledge song is included in Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Songs of All Time!
My arrangement is made for the Late Intermediate / Early Advanced player -- there are right hand runs that stretch out the enjoyment of bluesy harmony, The relaxed 6/8 time has a two beat feel, with crescendos and dramatic pauses to make this song so much more expressive.
When I was writing this, I had in mind how wonderful it would be to have this song played as a first dance at a wedding. (The dramatic pauses would be perfect for a dramatic dip on the dance floor!) Can you picture it too?
