Remaining mostly in the traditional Dorian mode, the harmony is nonetheless striking, the melody weaving in and out among the parts. The opening bassoon solo is also cued in the horn part, should the bassoonist find it a bit high, and an alternate part for bass clarinet is furnished as a substitute for bassoon.
