A virtuosic tour de force for soloist and orchestra cast in four large movements. The opening movement, an extended violin cadenza/cantilena supported by imaginatively varied orchestra commentary, emerges into a wittily conversational scherzo (Vivace). Similarly paired, the darkly expressive Largo elides with the concluding Allegro, a cascade of brilliant passagework and rhythmic vitality. A masterwork that will find a welcome home in the contemporary violin concerto repertory.
