Notes from the Composer:

It all started in Kyiv, the capitol of the Ukraine, a country not too far from my good friend Sara in Kazakhstan.  I had been searching for a piece of genuine Baltic Amber, which only comes from the Baltic Region, most of it coming from Russia.  Amber from this region is said to be dated from the Eocene epoch.  Upon searching, I found a small shop from the Ukraine and met the energy of a wonderful lady named Irina, who sent me the Amber bracelet (along with another small gift) that I have today.  She also included a lovely note:

I was very glad to receive the package that had stamps on it from the Ukraine, air mail labels in French, and had been around Europe and Central Asia. Therefore, I had to write a movement to this suite that encompassed much of the range of the piano, providing a firm foundation with lower bass notes, and soaring melodies in the right hand.  After the introduction, the first melody is based off of Irina’s name, one can hear it go up and back down a triadic form.

II.          "Stand"-  Intransitive Verb  1 a: to support oneself on the feet.

This movement begins with a simple melody and expands further into octaves much like some of the other movements in this piece.  So, what happens when you decide to take control of freedom?  Freedom is free as it is, but what happens when you choose it?  Much like Newton’s first law above, this movement is about regaining control of your personal expansion.  One returns to a sense of security in the cadences at measures 10 and 12, but then expands into octaves of the main melody that already have a sense of strange familiarity to it.  Expansion even further occurs in sixteenth note octave variations of the main melody, showing what would first look like spread sparseness and flightiness, but is controlled chaos. Freedom.  It slows, but does not come to a grinding halt, and is set free and able to ring out into the distance in the last fermata.

III.        "Awake"-  Intransitive Verb  3: to become conscious or aware of something.
