Although the melody offered here has been known as Purcell's TRUMPET VOLUNTARY< musicologists now tell us that it was really composed by Jeremiah Clarke. Jeremiah Clarke was a contemporary of Purcell's, and is said to have originally issued the piece under the title, THE PRICE OF DENMARK'S MARCH. Some authorities feel that all trills in music of this era should be started on the upper note, but performance practice among reputable players reveals a divergence of procedure. To this end some will wish to begin the trills on the upper note, and some on the lower; the final decision will be made by the player according to his skill, experience, and musical taste.
