A Celtic fiddle tune is taken through its paces in this idiomatically scored selection ideal for a more developed string ensemble. The piece has the standard ABA form and sounds more difficult than it truly is. Set up a comfortable tempo and the Irish charm will warm up the ensemble and audience alike.
My first encounter with the Irish reelxa0Toss the Feathers came while searching for some traditional Irish music. I was immediately drawn to the energy and rhythm of this charming tune. Its unique appeal has been embraced by a variety of performing ensembles. The melody translates equally from a popular Irish Rock band to a symphony orchestra. It can be as small as a local pub or as big as a concert hall.In setting this music, I wanted to keep the traditional feel of an Irish reel. This leads us to the opening statement on the violins. You can hear the dancers tapping their shoes on the wooden floors of the dance halls in Ireland. The music adds a bagpipe quality at m. 17 with the addition of the low strings. The B-section of the melody enters at m.44 and should have an uplifting, forward-moving quality to it. The A-section of the melody returns at m. 49, but is split up as a call and response. Some rhythmic punches add some new texture to the melody. The violas and cellos take over the melody at m. 91. One final statement of the B-section at m. 107 gives the piece an exciting finish.
