A student of Kodaly in Budapest, the pianist, composer and conductor Tibor Harsanyi travelled to France where he joined an elite group of expatriate composers - including Martinu, Tansman, and Tcherepnin - known as 'l'ecole de Paris'. The music here, flavoured with the jazz inflections of the dance halls, neo-classicist dissonances, and Bartok-influenced folk colour, presents a survey of his stylistic development from essentially Romantic roots encountered in the Sonatine to his final work, the Viola Sonata, which retains a mixture of sensuousness and earthiness that connects it to his earlier works.
