The text of the Three Vinigals evoke the growing and stomping of grapes. The name Vinigal combines the words "vinifera" (wine grapes) and "madrigal" (specifically the highly emotional late-16th-century vocal piece). Each poem was set to music with madrigal-like word painting including dramatic shifts in tempo, unusual harmonic movement, and counterpoint. The first movement paints the picture of the blazing sun with striking dissonance in the sopranos. The quiet growth of the leaves in the second movement is interrupted by the discovery of young grapes, which is depicted by fast imitative counterpoint. As autumn arrives, temperatures cool, but soon there is a joyous fugue as grapes are stomped into wine.   The world-premiere performance of Three Vinigals featured four solo vocalists, although the work may also be performed by full choir.
