John Coprario (c. 1570 - 1626) also known as Giovanni Coprario or Coperario, was an English composer, viol player and lutenist who was born and plain old John Cooper. He changed his name in the early 17th century. It is often said he did this after a visit to Italy, though there is no evidence he had been to the country. He enjoyed an enviable reputation and gained the distinction of being the favorite composer of King Charles I. This fact substantiated by the creation of a special group of musicians under the direction of Coprario for Charles I and Coprario's subsequent appointment as composer-in-ordinary to Charles I in 1625. Research completed in the last few decades has revealed that Coprario's outstanding reputation among his contemporaries was well founded, for he is now recognized as one of the most important English instrumental composers of the early seventeenth century.

About English Instrumental Music

c. 1600. Some of the English music of this period is suitable only for viols but there's plenty written in a style that makes sense on all kinds of instruments. That is what is produced in this series. Available as score and parts.
