The River at the End of Day

By Colin Kirkpatrick

This is a collection of fifteen delightful elementary piano pieces on the pastoral theme of the river. Youngsters are sure to enjoy these tuneful pieces, crafted especially for the young learner. They are ideal for young beginners, but of course could be used with beginners of all ages. More experienced students will find them ideal and enjoyable s sight-reading exercises or to develop the useful skill of transposing at sight.

The colorful pieces are arranged in approximate order of difficulty, so you can feel free to pick and mix according to the needs of the students. The first few pieces use only quarter notes (crotchets), half notes (minims) and whole notes (semibreves). Afterwards, note values are introduced gradually. Each piece takes up just one page and every piece includes some information about the music. Sometimes the information raises questions such as how short a staccato note should be. In several of the pieces, the student is encouraged to make musical decisions.

Many fingering suggestions are included and while articulations are omitted from the first few pieces they’re later introduced gradually. Phrasing is omitted from the first nine pieces on the grounds that most beginner students have enough to cope with. You might like to introduce the concept of phrasing in the earlier pieces if your student can handle the music without difficulty. The audio sample contains recordings of the following pieces: (1) Quiet Waters, (2) Drifting, (3) At the Riverbank, (7) Song of the Water Gypsy, (14) Children’s River Song and (15) Round Dance.

The composer, Colin Kirkpatrick studied at London’s Royal College of Music and followed a career in music education. He was a High School Music Director for about fifteen years and later became a Music Education Adviser, with the added responsibility for training teachers and directing the instrumental teaching service. He has published a great deal of music and his publishers include Boosey & Hawkes, Novello, Paxton, Schott, Oxford University Press, Chester, Belwin Mills and Intrada (Netherlands). His music has been performed and broadcast all over Europe as well as in Japan, Thailand, Australia and the USA.
