The Promise of Advent is an adaptation of the text The Praise of Christmas found in the Oxford Book of Carols. J. William Greene has modified the lyrics so that they are entirely compatible with Advent and its themes, losing none of the charm of the English original. Dr. Greene's masterful arrangements for SATB choir are not only enjoyable to sing, but maintain a high degree of technical writing skill as well. Variety of texture leads the listener and the singer through four verses of the rhythmic, minor mode Old English carol in a most engaging arrangement. The stylistic appropriateness of the organ accompaniment makes The Promise of Advent a particularly strong medium to "rejoice and drive the cold winter away!".
