The Miller’s Waltz
Dan Jones
At the time of composing, I was living in Perthshire, Scotland. Near to our family home is an abandoned water mill called Dron Mill. All that remains today is the shell of a building, spaces where wheels and axles once stood, and a babbling burn which has been reclaimed by nature.
In centuries past, this would have been a place of activity and prosperity. I imagined a miller living in this idyllic corner, concealed by the hillside. Maybe he and his wife danced in the garden.
The Miller’s Waltz reflects the indescribable magic which some places possess. A poet in the 19th century also felt this magic when he/she wrote anonymously:
"At the fit o’ Balmanno, a whin-covered hill,
Nestlin’ mang trees, there you’ll find the auld mill;
If wi’ peace and contentment your mind you wad fill,
Gae up to Dron Mill by the Ochils."
I hope you enjoy playing ‘The Miller’s Waltz’.
