What better time than Christmas, to come together to share some fun ensemble playing with your students? Playing the piano is often a solitary pursuit, but recently, Class Piano, or Group Piano lessons have become more popular. This piece is inspired by these new teaching opportunities- principally, by Linda Poelzer and her students at the Leading Note Music Studio in Canada, who were eager to incorporate percussion parts into their piano performance.
This arrangement of Little Drummer Boy has Piano One and Piano Two, sharing the melody, while Piano Three is the foundation. It begins in C Major, but then modulates to the key of D Major for the last verse. Don’t miss the Ravel like harmonies in the 2nd & 3rd verse of the melody. But rhythm is paramount in this arrangement: Eighth note patterns are equally traded among all three groups to foster a "regal" feeling as the little drummer boy joyfully performs for the Christ child. A fun addition: Percussion parts! The piece begins and ends with each Piano part "drumming": Part One creates cymbal like sounds and snap their fingers, Part Two slaps their hands on their thighs and hand clap, and Part Three adds foot stomps. The thigh slaps and hand claps could become an audience participation throughout the entire song….
