Hale A. VanderCook was one of the foremost cornet/trumpetpedagogues in the early part of the twentieth century. He foundedthe VanderCook Cornet School in 1909, now known as theVanderCook College of Music. He was a prolific composer ofover seventy marches, hundreds of solos and numerous methodsfor cornet/trumpet. These twenty-five delightful compositions forsolo cornet/trumpet were written in a series for Carl Fischer. All ofthe titles are derived from flowers or plant names. For the first timeever, all of these gems have been collected together so that futuregenerations of trumpet players can enjoy these works by this greatmaster of the cornet/trumpet.
In this collection of solos for Cornet or Trumpet with piano, H. A. VanderCookdemonstrates a remarkable grasp of how best to impart engaging instructionon the instrument. In each solo there are carefully outlined technical tasksconcealed in an appealing musical environment. The player is unconsciouslydrawn into correct execution. As students progress through the graded series, they are building a solid intuitive intimacy with the instrument. The reward of playing these delightful pieces includes the incentive to continueon and explore further — surely the proof of a creative teacher.Among VanderCook's many outstanding students was Clifford Lillya. Lillyainherited VanderCook's sensibility toward the performance and teaching of theinstrument and had a long and illustrious career as the trumpet professor atthe University of Michigan. I was fortunate to have Clifford Lillya as my trumpetteacher. It is with great pleasure that I introduce you to this VanderCookcollection and so pass on this wonderful tradition of music-based instruction.—Rob Roy McGregorTrumpet, Los Angeles Philharmonic.
