The Graces of Love (Le Gratie d'Amore) is the title of a book published in 1602 by Cesare Negri, the famous dance master of the Milan court in the Renaissance. It contains numerous dance tunes and precise descriptions of courtly dances. It also includes the tune Il bianco fior (The White Flower) on which the first movement of the present piece is based. A vigorous dance in three-four, it leads to an acceleration and a sudden shift to an even meter towards the end. The second movement, calm and contemplative in character, features the tune Vaghe bellezze ... (Veiled Beauty ...). Widely spaced melodic parts surround two solos during which the tune is variedand developed. Finally, the third movement contains a saltarello with a hypnotic rhythm, ending the work with flair and gusto.

The Graces of Love (Le Gratie d'Amore) is de titel van een boek dat in 1602 werd geschreven door Cesare Negri, de beroemde balletmeester die in de late renaissancetijd aan het Milanese hof werkte. Het bevat een aantal dansmelodieen en precieze beschrijvingen van hofdansen. Ook de melodie van 'Il bianco fior' ('The White Flower' oftewel 'De witte bloem') is erin opgenomen. Hierop is het eerste deel van dit werk gebaseerd. Het gaat om een levendige dans in driekwartsmaat die leidt naar een versnelling en vervolgens uitmondt in een plotselinge verschuiving naar een gelijkmatige maatsoort. Het tweede deel, dat rustig en contemplatief van sfeer is, bevat het stuk'Vaghe bellezze...' ('Veiled Beauty' oftewel 'Gesluierde schoonheid'). Breed uitgesponnen cantilena's omlijsten twee solo's waarin de melodie wordt gevarieerd en ontwikkeld. Als laatste bevat het derde deel een 'Saltarello' met een hypnotiserend ritme, waarmee het werk op imposante en tegelijkertijd virtuoze wijze afsluit.

The Graces of Love (Die Anmut der Liebe) ist ein im Jahre 1602 publiziertes Traktat uber die hofische Tanzkunst von Cesare Negri, einem beruhmten Tanzmeister am Mailander Hof der Renaissance. Es enthalt zahlreiche Tanzmelodien und Tanzmuster. Aus dieser Sammlung stammt auch die Melodie Il bianco fior (Die weisse Blume), welche die Grundlage fur den ersten Satz dieses Stuckes bildet. Es ist ein lebhafter Dreivierteltanz, der zum Ende hin schneller wird und in eine gerade Taktart wechselt. Im Zentrum des zweiten Satzes steht die getragene, melancholische Melodie Vaghe bellezze ... (Verschleierte Schonheit ...). Weit ausschwingende Kantilenen umrahmendarin zwei Soli, in denen die Melodie variiert und weiterentwickelt wird. Der dritte Satz basiert auf einem Saltarello mit einem hypnotisch wirkenden Rhythmus, der dem Schluss einen zugleich erhabenen und virtuosen Charakter verleiht.

Cet ouvrage contient de nombreux airs de danse et des descriptions precises des danses courtoises. Parmi ces airs se trouve Il Bianco fior (la Fleur blanche), duquel est tire le premier mouvement de cette composition. Cette danse vigoureuse en 3/4 s'accelere avant de passer soudainement a une mesure binaire vers la fin du mouvement. Le deuxieme mouvement, de caractere calme et contemplatif, comprend l'air Vaghe bellezze... (Beaute voilee...). Des elements melodiques tres espaces s'articulentautour de deux solos au cours desquels l'air est varie et developpe. Enfin, le troisieme mouvement est fonde sur un saltarello au rythme hypnotique qui acheve la piece avec elegance et enthousiasme.
