The Gift to Sing is a setting for SATB and piano of the poem by James Weldon Johnson, the American writer, poet, and civil rights activist. It tells us that whatever troubles life might bring, singing will ‘turn the gloom to cheerful day’. This song similarly turns, from a sombre minor to a joyful major, finally evaporating into the distance.
