Composed by Elizabeth Poston. Arranged by Olivia Sparkhall (for Upper Voices and piano). Christmas,Contemporary,Holiday,Sacred. Octavo. 7 pages. Olivia Sparkhall #6490477. Published by Olivia Sparkhall (A0.988131).

This delightful carol by Elizabeth Poston, where a dormouse is awoken from its hibernation with the news of Jesus’s birth, has been reimagined for 2-part upper voices. A solo voice, taking the role of ‘lizard’, adds to the overall charm, and brings the piece to life.

Equally suitable for children’s choirs as more mature upper voices groups, the second part has been carefully constructed to suit treble voices, as well as altos.

About the composer

Elizabeth Poston (1905-87) made a considerable contribution to music of the 20th century. A prolific composer of some 1000 works, she was influential in the establishment of what became BBC Radio 3, and wrote many pieces for BBC television and radio plays. She was part of a group of composers interested in collecting folksongs which, it was feared, would be lost if not transcribed. She published song books, edited the Cambridge Hymnal, and was frequently commissioned to write choral music. This piece was written for St Edmund’s School, Manchester, UK.

About the arranger

Olivia Sparkhall has arranged many pieces by women composers from the past, creating accessible works for upper voices choirs, as well as mixed voices. Her arrangements include songs by Barbara Strozzi, Fanny Hensel, Clara Schumann, and Amy Beach. Several are published as part of Banks Music Publications’ Kassian Choral Series.

This product was created by a member of ArrangeMe, Hal Leonard’s global self-publishing community of independent composers, arrangers, and songwriters. ArrangeMe allows for the publication of unique arrangements of both popular titles and original compositions from a wide variety of voices and backgrounds.
