François Dauverné was the first trumpet teacher at the famed Paris Conservatoryand maintained that post for thirty-five years. He was the teacher of such notablestudents as Jean Baptiste Arban and Louis Saint-Jacome. As a performer Dauvernéwas first trumpet in the Paris Opera Orchestra for over thirty years. This collection of soloscomposed by Dauverné is unique in that they are among the very first solos written forthe valved trumpet. Dauverné is credited for being one of the first individuals to playon the valved trumpet in a public performance, and convinced such composers asBerlioz, Rossini, and Meyerbeer to write for the instrument. This collection of six solos wasoriginally composed for solo trumpet and chamber orchestra. Professor Ronnie Ingle hasmeticulously transcribed and edited these groundbreaking works for solo trumpet, andhas made available here for the first time a modern edition for solo trumpet and piano.This is a collection that all trumpeters should have in their library.
François Georges Auguste Dauverné (1799-1874) was a considerably influential nineteenthcentury pedagogue and trumpeter. When Luigi Cherubini (1760-1842), founder of the Paris Conservatory,implemented a trumpet course in 1833, he appointed Dauverné as the first trumpet instructor. Hecontinued in that position for over thirty-five years, teaching such students as Jean-Baptiste Arban (1825-1899) and Louis Saint-Jacome (1830-1898), both of whom became well-known in their own right fortheir contributions to the development of the trumpet and the standardization of trumpet technique. As aperformer, Dauverné held several posts, including a prestigious position as first trumpeter with the ParisOpera Orchestra, for which he held for over thirty years. In 1827, he performed a concert in Paris onan F trumpet with a newly-developed valve system, becoming the first individual to use valved trumpet(referred to as trompette modern or trompette chromatique) in a public setting. It is for this instrumentthat Dauverné composed his Collection de VI Solos pour la Trompette Chromatique for solo trumpetand chamber orchestra, which has being reduced here in a modern edition for trumpet with piano. Itis a pleasure to present these solos for the first time in a modern edition for trumpet and piano, and isespecially gratifying to contribute to the uncovering of music composed by one of the most importanttrumpet figures in history.
