By Jaco Pastorius. By Alfred Ellis. Arranged by Jim Fieldhouse. Funk,Jazz. 33 pages. Nefarious Music Publications #704873. Published by Nefarious Music Publications (A0.1101560).

The Chicken, written in 1969 by Pee Wee Ellis as the B side to James Brown's record "Popcorn", is a funk classic which has been covered by numerous artists over the years. It shot to notoriety when jazz bassist Jaco Pastorius released his studio version in the 70s and the tune has become a firm favourite of jazz and funk groups everywhere. This burnin' version for saxophone quartet is a thorough workout for all four players. Your baritone saxophonist will enjoy wrestling with the iconic bass line, and there are some fun and detailed funk lines for the rest of the ensemble to get their teeth into. Observing the articulation and dynamic markings will really help to bring the music off the page and hitting a good grooving tempo will allow the individual lines to sit nicely within the texture and the detail to be heard. There is an improvised solo for Alto 1 to get creative with, and there is the option to add drum kit to the ensemble for more impact. Scoring: Alto Sax 1 Alto Sax 2 Tenor Sax Baritione Sax Drums (optional) Difficulty Rating : advanced plus.
