Growing up in Bessemer, Alabama I spent many a cold winter's nightwith my friends playing Christmas carols around the neighborhood andin remote locations on the front lawns of friends' and relatives' homes. Itwas great fun. There were usually only three of us. We just couldn'tseem to enlist that one extra player. If we were lucky we had 3trombones, but sometime there was a euphonium, tenor sax or bari saxsubstitute. Finding music was difficult. So we wrote arrangements takenfrom the hymn book and from other sources. This is the inspiration forthis caroling book.
I wanted to achieve two goals in compiling this set of carols: that therewould be plenty of them and that they would be easily playable for mosttrombonists - on cold December nights. With the help of my good friend,Steve Sample, I believe we have succeeded.
So take the book out this Christmas season and have fun. And please "swing" on Steve's arrangements.
