This work is based on the famous stories of Baron Munchhausen. In these tall tales, the baron undertook all sorts of fabulous adventures. He flew, for example, on a cannonball, or rode on a horse torn in two; he turned a hungry wolf inside out, and pulled himself out of a swamp by his own hair.The historical figure of Munchhausen did exist, and some of the tales were actually recounted by him, while others have since been attributed to him. Four of the tales served as the inspiration for this composition. The music isn't simply a word-for-word transcription of the stories, however, but rather conveys a particular mood or specific scene, often with a humorous twist.Here are thefour parts of the composition:The Horse: During a snowstorm the baron ties his horse to a post and falls into a deep sleep. As he awakes, the snow is melted away and the horse is dangling from the top of a church spire.Cannonball: The baron jumps onto a cannonball in flight, to spy on a city under siege. In mid-air he decides to return whence he came by stepping onto a cannonball flying in the other direction. He then gets shot into the city a second time and opens the gates from within.Flight to the Moon: Baron Munchhausen flies to the moon in a floating spacecraft, where he meets all sorts of strange creatures.Journey through the Earth: The baron jumps down into the bowels of Mount Etna and sets off on an adventurous journey right through the centre of the Earth.

Dit werk is gebaseerd op de avonturen van Baron Munchausen. In deze verhalen beleeft de knotsgekke baron allerlei fantastische avonturen. Zo kon de baron op kanonskogels vliegen, verder rijden op een in tweeen gehakt paard, hongerige wolvenbinnenstebuiten keren of zichzelf aan zijn eigen vlecht uit een moeras trekken. Voor het schrijven van deze compositie fungeerden vier hoofdstukken uit het oorspronkelijke boek als inspiratiebron. De muziek is echter geen letterlijke uitbeelding van deze hoofdstukken, ze roept eerder een bepaalde sfeer of beeld op, vaak met eenvleugje humor.

Dieses Werk basiert auf den beruhmten Lugengeschichten des Barons Munchhausen. In diesen Erzahlungen erlebt der Baron allerlei fantastische Abenteuer. So konnte er auf einer Kanonenkugel fliegen, auf einem in zwei Teile gerissenen Pferd reiten, das Innere eines hungrigen Wolfs nach aussen kehren und sich an seinem eigenen Schopf aus dem Morast ziehen. Die historische Figur Munchhausen hat es tatsachlich gegeben. Ein paar der Lugengeschichten hat er tatsachlich selbst erzahlt, andere werden ihm nur zugeschrieben. Vier der Abenteuer dienten als Inspirationsquelle fur diese Komposition. Die Musik ist jedoch keine wortwortliche Umsetzung der Geschichten, sie erweckt vielmehreine bestimmte Atmosphare oder ein Bild zum Leben, oft mit einem humoristischen Einschlag.Dies sind die vier Teile der Komposition:The Horse (Das Pferd): Wahrend eines Schneesturms bindet der Baron sein Pferd an einen Pfahl und fallt in einen tiefen Schlaf. Als er wieder aufwacht, ist der Schnee geschmolzen und sein Pferd baumelt an einer Kirchturmspitze.Canonball (Kanonenkugel): Der Baron springt auf eine abgeschossene Kanonkugel auf, um eine im Krieg belagerte Stadt ausspionieren zu konnen. Auf halbem Wege kehrt er zuruck, in dem er auf eine in die andere Richtung fliegende Kanonenkugel umsteigt. Dann lasst er sich ein zweites Mal in die Stadt schiessen und offnet von innen das Tor.Flight to the Moon (Flug zum Mond): Baron Munchhausen fliegt mit einem schwebenden Gefahrt zum Mond, wo er auf allerlei seltsame Gestalten trifft. Journey through the Earth (Reise durch die Erde): Der Baron springt in den Vulkan Atna und unternimmt eine abenteuerliche Reise quer durch das Innere der Erde.

Cette oeuvre s'inspire des celebres histoires du baron de Munchhausen. Dans ces recits extraordinaires, le baron se lance dans toutes sortes d'aventures fabuleuses. Il vole sur un boulet de canon, par exemple, ou monte un cheval coupe en deux ; il attelle un loup a son traineau, et s'extirpe lui-meme d'un marecage en se tirant par les cheveux.En tant que personnage historique, le baron de Munchhausen a reellement existe. Il a lui-meme relate certaines de ses mesaventures, d'autres, plus rocambolesques lui ont ete attribuees depuis. La presente composition s'inspire de quatre de ces recits. Toutefois, la musique ne reproduit pas litteralement les histoires mais exprime plutot uneambiance ou une scene particuliere, souvent avec une touche d'humour.Les aventures du baron de Munchausen, une oeuvre en quatre mouvements :The Horse (Le cheval): Au milieu d'une tempete de neige, le baron attache son cheval a un poteau et tombe dans un profond sommeil. Lorsqu'il se reveille, la neige a fondu et le cheval est suspendu au clocher d'une eglise.Canonball (Le boulet de canon): Le baron saute sur un boulet de canon en plein vol pour espionner une ville assiegee. Cela fait, il revient a son point de depart en sautant sur un autre boulet de canon allant dans l'autre direction. Il est ensuite propulse a nouveau dans la ville dont il ouvre les portes de l'interieur.Flight to the Moon (Voyage vers la lune): Le baron de Munchausen part pour la lune dans un vaisseau spatial. Arrive sur l'astre, il y rencontre toutes sortes d'etranges creatures.Journey through the Earth (Voyage au centre de la Terre): Le baron saute dans les profondeurs du mont Etna et se lance dans un periple qui l'emmene au coeur de notre planete.
