Mahler's massive, complex Symphony of a Thousand has been called the crowning achievement of his career. This setting is based on the closing scene of Goethe's Faust, with the theme of the redemptive power of love. Its form is a powerful synthesis of motet, cantata, oratorio, song cycle, and symphony. An unabridged replica of the 'Muzyka,' Moscow edition, 1976.

When my choir (The Dessoff Symphonic Choir) was selected to sing with the New York Philharmonic in Lorin Maazel's last set of concerts before his retirement, I felt a need to become as familiar as possible with this towering work. The Robert Shaw recording was a good start, but...

nothing conveys the sheer intellectual power of the work like a printed score. The Dover score is breathtaking in its clarity, which is not an easy chore for a work that is scored in some places for double chorus (9 parts in all), four soloists, a chilrden's choir, eight French horns, two harps, and a variety of keyboard instruments (piano, harmonium, organ, celeste). This score somehow manages to get it all on the printed page, with easy to read lyrics. As a bonus, in the front of the score the original German text is printed side by side with an English translation. Note for note (and there are thousands), this is a rare bargain.
