“These 12 arrangements are intended to depart a bit from the way that the songs were first set down by Irving Berlin, Jerome Kern, and Richard Rodgers. In terms of harmony, the use of modulations, and the recasting of melodies with unexpected accompaniment, I've tried, with all due respect, to move their classic songs into new territory. Sometimes I've embellished the melodies themselves in the way a jazz player might throw in variations, but these are not jazz variations. To the contrary, the settings are perhaps reminiscent in manner of some of the preludes of Chopin and Debussy, and of the shorter piano pieces of Ravel.” – Dick Hyman. Songs include: Hello, Young Lovers • The Last Time I Saw Paris • People Will Say We're in Love • The Song Is You • This Nearly Was Mine • The Way You Look Tonight • We Kiss in a Shadow • and more.

Dick Hyman has that great gift of finding the most interesting harmonies and harmonic progressions that are natural, easy to play, and yet have a sophisticated sound. His choice of songs combines standards and neglected treasures, and I'm always grateful when I discover a wonderful old song that has...

    somehow slipped into obscurity.

Dick Hyman is one of my favorite arrangers and several of the songs in this selection are classic Hyman. The orchestral breadth and harmonic nuances of his work never fail to give me pleasure. A few pieces here are less rewarding than usual, however, hence my overall rating of three...

stars. Hyman is a five star arranger, and this collection of standards is well worth the price.

I found this book disappointing. I'm sure the author is a very talented arranger, but his intent here appears to be to create arrangements that are different just for the sake of being different. Some pieces are hardly recognizable and hardly what I would call beautiful arrangements.
