Stars! Angels! Shepherds! Kings! was written to be performed by children's choirs of all ages, large and small. The entire musical may be performed by one choir of varied ages or by multiple choirs in a graded choir program. It could also be performed by children from Sunday school classes. The story line of this musical basically tells the Christmas story from the point of view of the stars, angels, shepherds and kings. The opening movement tells of stars, angels, shepherds and kings coming together on this holy night to sing the birth of the Christ child. Then, if young children are used, they sing 'Twinkle! Twinkle' (the song of the stars). It is suggested that the children could have their faces in 'star' cut-outs or the children could wear white gloves with glitter painted on the inside of their hands. They could then do simple hand movements and their hands would 'twinkle'. The next movement would be the song of the angels - 'Gloria' - for lower elementary, if this is a graded program. The children could be dressed as angels, perhaps using a square of white cloth and halos, or if they have choir robes, just a halo might be enough. Movement three - the shepherds - is sung by the older elementary children and includes a solo for one shepherd and an option for a bit of action on the part of the shepherds as they wake. This movement includes exiting down the aisles singing the refrain of 'O Come, All Ye Faithful'. Again, shepherds could be in costume or in robe. A shawl could be added to a robe to denote they are shepherds. 'Mary's Lullaby' is a sweet solo for Mary. It is sung as Mary and Joseph kneel/stand by the manger. Mary and Joseph could be in costume. The shepherd's (older elementary children) return. They sing the refrain of 'O Come, All Ye Faithful' as they come back down the aisles. They gather and stand around the manger and sing 'Wondrous Star' as the three kings come down the aisle with their gifts. As the Finale begins, the stars and angels come back on stage and gather round the shepherds and the entire cast sings 'Star! Angels! Shepherds! Kings!' - which incorporates 'Go, Tell It on the Mountain'. The music for this work is quite simple. Staging can be simple or complex. The entire production is approximately 20-22 minutes in length. It can be accompanied entirely from the keyboard, or with optional instruments, such as flute, violin and handbells. Parts will be included in the complete score. Along with 'Go, Tell It' there are a number of other familiar carols that the children will benefit from learning and enjoy singing, including 'Twinkle, Twinkle'; 'Away in a Manger', 'Angels We Have Heard on High', 'The First Noel', 'O Come All Ye Faithful', 'We Three Kings' and the Czech carol 'Rock-a Bye, My Dear Little Boy'.
