In 432 St. Patrick traveled from Scotland to Ireland and within a few years he succeeded in converting the entire Irish population to Christianity. The bishop died on 17th March 461 and in Ireland, as a tribute to this remarkable bishop, this date became a national holiday called St. Patrick’s Day. St. Patrick’s Day, symbolized by the shamrock, is one big party with traditional Irish dancing, parades with highly decorated floats, hundreds of concerts and all kinds of colorful characters on the streets. Bring a touch of Irish magic to any concert with this lively composition.

In het jaar 432 kwam de uit Schotland afkomstige bisschop St. Patrick naar Ierland. Hij wist de Ierse bevolking te bekeren tot het christendom. St. Patrick overleed op 17 maart in het jaar 461. In Ierland werd 17 maart, als eerbetoonaan deze opmerkelijke bisschop, een nationale feestdag: St. Patrick’s Day. Componist Johan Nijs werd door deze legendarische figuur ge nspireerd tot het schrijven van dit levendige werk, genaamd St. Patrick Dances.

Der aus Schottland kommende heilige St. Patrick bekehrte in Irland innerhalb weniger Jahre die gesamte Bevölkerung zum Christentum. Sein Todestag, der 17. März, wurde in Irland als Nationalfeiertag, aber auch in anderen Ländern mit hohem irischstämmigem Bevölkerungsanteil groß gefeiert. Johan Nijs komponierte die fröhlichen St. Patrick Dances, inspiriert vom St. Patrick’s Day, einem einzigen großen Fest mit Volkstänzen, Festumzügen, vielen Arten von Musik und allerlei bunten Figuren. Originaire d’Écosse, saint Patrick s’installe en Irlande en 432 et parvient convertir le pays au christianisme en peu de temps. D’abord prêtre puis évêque, saint Patrick meurt le 17 mars 461. Jour férié déclaré fête nationale irlandaise, la Saint-Patrick est un jour de réjouissance célébré en l’honneur du saint évêque. De nombreuses processions et parades sont organisées cette occasion. L’Irlande s’enflamme sur des musiques variées et des danses traditionnelles tandis que des chars colorés envahissent les rues où fourmillent toutes sortes de personnages étonnants et attachants. Le trèfle est le symbole de la Saint-Patrick. De nombreuses légendes courent autour de ce saintpatron mais, faute de repères historiques précis, il est difficile son sujet d’extraire la réalité du merveilleux. La Saint-Patrick est également célébrée aux États-Unis, en Australie et dans toutes les communautés irlandaises du monde entier.Johan Nijs s’est inspiré de ce personnage légendaire pour composer St. Patrick Dances, une œuvre pétillante et festive.
