A spirit of 'Americana' pervades... the movements are Spirit, Cool Gust, Beautiful Dream, Something Good, Ostinato, Spirit2, and Contrary Dance. SPIRIT demonstrates one of the purposes of Music, that is to honor and express love to friends gone by and SPIRIT teaches how art can triumph over grief. You see this work is dedicated to the memory of Wendy Maraniss. Wendy was was a top-level pianist, tireless supporter of new music and an extremely dedicated teacher. She died in a tragic car accident when driving to teach a student make-up lesson on a Sunday afternoon. After her death I discovered that she had written a tome of small piano pieces for children. I offered to help organize them and at that time composed ‘response’ pieces. SPIRIT is an orchestration of these original pieces which have touches of Wendy’s music imbedded in them. Her name is stated in the music as well in the movement Beautiful Dream. The last movement, Contrary Dance, has an open country fair atmosphere which is dedicated and descriptive of Ithaca, New York where Wendy and I and our other friends lived at the time... and offers an enthusiastic conclusion to this work!
