These pieces are from a collection of Pezel's compositions entitled Bicinia Variorum instrumentum, published originally in Leipzig in 1675. All the pieces in this collection bear specific indications for instrumentation, most being for violins, the rest for cornetti or clarini. The present works are for cornetti, which makes this arrangement for trumpets reasonable; but in fact they would be equally suitable for some other treble instruments, particularly oboes, recorders, or flutes. This modern edition is a transcription of the 1675 publication, which is quite legible and largely free of errors. Bar divisions were originally made with little slashes across one line of the staff; these were occasionally left out and have been replaced by their modern equivalent without comment. In the original publication of #62 the stems of two notes were printed, but the note heads forgotten. These have been replaced and bracketed. Time signatures, note values and keys have been left unchanged. There are no dynamic markings, and the editor feels it best to leave such matters to the performers, who may have quite different ideas about them. The editor has supplied the continuo realizations, which, though sufficiently elaborate for performance, may be added to extempore by experienced players. If possible, a wind or string bass should support the continuo, which is intended for harpsichord or organ. The latter is especially suitable.Robert Paul Block, September 29, 1970, Iowa City, U.S.A.
