From 1665 until his death J.H. Schmelzer, as the most prominent Viennese ballet composer of the 17th century, wrote instrumental dances of all kinds. Paul Nettl calls him "the first Viennese composer of folk dances", as he not only followed ltalian and French models, but at the same time incorporated Austrian and Bavarian folk melodies into his compositions. The parts of this "Sonata a 4 detta la Carolietta" are in the archives of Kremsier Castle. The continuo part is not figured. In this edition the figuration of the continuo part is provided by the editor. A trumpet may be used instead of a Cornetto.
