At a little over 2 minutes running time, Smooth Criminal is a fun piece to finish a recital or viola group concert, or as a special expo of a viola section. Provided the students have practiced their parts individually, this piece can be put together with minimal rehearsal time.
A Note About the Playing Level:
Viola Parts 3 and 4 are appropriate for students playing at RCM Level 1, ASTA Level 1, or Suzuki mid-Book 1, (middle of the book, past Etude).
Viola Part 2 is appropriate for students at RCM Level 2-3, ASTA level 2, or Suzuki Book 2, Two Grenadiers. Part 2 includes some use of the low 1st finger, and optional shifts or 4th finger extensions to the F above the staff (in alto clef).
Part 1 is appropriate for students at RCM Level 4, ASTA Level 4-5, or Suzuki Book 3-4. Part 1 includes some use of the treble clef, and shifting quickly in the 3rd and 4th positions.
Suzuki teachers will appreciate the prevalent use of the Twinkle Variation A rhythm throughout the piece!
