Composed by Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky. Arranged by Jon Thingvall. Contemporary Classical,Jazz,Big Band,General Instructional. Score,Set of Parts. 10 pages. Published by Jon Thingvall (S0.334963).

This is a 4/4 swing version of Tchaikovsky's classic waltz, for grade 3 jazz band.  The key (concert F) is lower than the original orchestral piece, and the chords have been kept to classic big band sounds without too many extended or altered chords.  The written articulations will help young musicians learn the characteristics of the swing idiom.  The high written A, the last note for the lead trumpet can be lowered a step to a G, if needed.

No section is highlighted for more than a few bars at a time, and all of the playing is tutti.

Dynamics

Due to the requirements of the audiio sample, I had to put in extra dynamic markings to get the normal sounds a jazz band would play on long note (namely, a forte-piano attack followed by a crescendo).  I had planned on removing them, but, once I saw them on the parts, I realized that they probably would be pencilled-in by students anyway.  So I left them.  If they interfere with reading, though, please let me know, and I will remove them at no cost.

Piano Part

As a classically-trained pianist, I remember well the confusion accompanying my first forays into the jazz world.  So I've included two piano parts.

One, for the more advanced student, is a basic lead-sheet with the bass line included, and it's the one that should be used if there's no bass player.

The other is more of a jazz etude.  Sammy Nestico's written-out chords were a great resource for me, so It's kind of written in that style, but it is intended to be more of a starting point than a finished part.  It offers some suggestions regarding quartal structure, rootless chords, and anticipations.  Today, there are so many resources online that even a quick search of video tutorials will yield a lot of information.  Although it may be played as is, the pianist is encouraged to develop it on his or her own, with their band leader's guidance.

When you make the purchase, you''ll be able to download the score.  Please e-mail me for the parts at  klazzkeys@aol.com.
