A flexible collection of 6 Burns songs designed for use in school, Burns Supper, and concert settings.

"John Anderson, my jo" This beautiful poem by Scotland's National bard celebrates ageing love. The lush treatment of the accompaniment provides a few unexpected twists to bring out the beauty of Burns' lyrics. This arrangement would sit comfortably in any concert, recital, or traditional Burns Supper.

Known throughout the world, "Auld Lang Syne" is a traditionally performed to mark the end of public gatherings ranging from Burns Suppers, New Year celebrations, through to house parties, concerts, and even conference halls. The first verse is performed by a solo voice as the audience /gathering /choir nostalgically reminisce of past and present friendships, before symbolically offering the hand of friendship as they join forces with the soloist to majestically sing the last verse.

After Burns visited Harviestoun in 1787 he composed "The Banks of the Devon", inspired by Charlotte Hamilton. Rather surprisingly, this lovely melody is rarely performed. Therefore, if you are on the lookout for something different this could be the hidden gem you are looking for. Why rarely heard? One theory is the melody was originally written for the fiddle, placing greater demands on technique when transferred to the voice (e.g. range, breath control, negotiating wide intervals). Bearing this in mind the question of dynamic contrast is left to the discretion of the individual.

This fun setting tells the tale of "Duncan Gray" as he attempts to woo Maggie around Christmastime.  It has been arranged to showcase the skills of both singer and accompanist (the singer possessing excellent story telling ability, and the pianist sufficient technique and flair to enhance the humour via the 'classical' links). The musical mayhem kicks off with C.P.E. Bach's 'Solfeggieto'.  The intro to verse 2 reflects Duncan's naivety (Prokofiev's 'Peter and the Wolf'). In the link to verse 3 the accompanist dares Duncan to jump over the water (Strauss 'Blue Danube’). After Duncan states that Maggie can go to France we hear a snippet of 'La Marseillaise'.  Interwoven into verse 4 is Massenet's 'Meditation' as poor Maggie takes ill. In verse 5 she cuts her losses and makes a play for Duncan (Tchaikovsky 'Romeo and Juliet'), and when Duncan finally comes up trumps we hear a nod to Handel (‘See the conquering hero returns’) before they tie the knot with Mendelssohn's - 'Bridal March'! When performed in a Burns Supper there is the option to invite the company to join with the refrain - "Ha, ha, the wooin' o’t".

"Green grow the rashes, O" is a very singable male-voice tribute to the fairer sex. It works equally well as a mixed voice item with the female voices joining in the singing of the refrain. A surefire winner at any Burns Supper!

"Ye Banks and Braes" is one of his best known songs. Written in 1791 it describes the thoughts of a love-lost girl as she wanders along the banks of the river Doon. Although it is fair to say the melody can be approached by singers of varying levels of ability and technique, it is the content of the accompaniment which provides the freshness and forward momentum.
