Published by Alan Edgar Ted Moon (S0.213789).Seeking suitable poetry to be used with the plaintive sound of the oboe, I eventually found inspiration from the poem Shadows of the Fallen by Sue Spivey, which Sue gave to me on Remembrance Day, 2015. I was privileged to be able to discuss the project with Sue and with oboist Mark Hutchinson. Having discussed in particular extended techniques, I decided not to use any, apart from easier smears. Takes a moving and unusual view on the loss of life in World War I
Each verse is preceded by a short music movement, then read out, perhaps by the oboist: this gives the player a break, essential in an unaccompanied work.
