Sea Dances for solo 'Cello played by Richard Jenkinson. 12:35 minutes
Sea Dances is cast in two movements, each in two sections. In the first movement, 'Allegretto - pochissimo piu mosso' the two sections are similar in tempo although the second section is a little more agitated. In the second movement, 'Lento - Brioso' the tempo contrasts are far greater. The piece was written in Charmouth, Dorset. While it doesn't attempt to portray images directly connected with the Dorset coastline, the location of its composition has a natural link with the sea and the atmosphere in Dorset.
The piece was commissioned by the Department for Continuing Education at Cardiff University and written for Richard Jenkinson who gave its first performance in South Wales (UK) in 1998. He has held principal cello posts with the Irish Chamber Orchestra and the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra. This recording was made in 2014.
