Sean O'Loughlin has delivered a stunning new composition with such pathos and lyrical energy that it will be the musical highlight of your year. There are limitless opportunities to teach musicianship with this one. This piece is a must have!.
Ruminations is a dramatic work for the developing string orchestra. The music is some of the richest, and most passionate that I have written. A rumination is the act of meditating, which is how the music flows throughout the piece. The use of mutes should give a certain velvet quality to the ensemble. The piece unfolds in a large arch form. The soft opening melodic idea sets the stage for the musical journey to follow. As the idea develops, be sure to bring out the inner moving lines to add a little more harmonic edge to the phrase. The first arrival point is that m. 9, which quickly fades away. The music almost is reminiscent of itself at m. 16. The phrase pulls back again, but this time it leads to an ominous bass line at m. 24. This starts the final build-up to m. 38. The music should maintain intensity throughout, even in the softer sections. An echo of the main melody follows at m. 41. Take your time throughout this section to let it breathe. The music should continue to diminuendo to the end. Make sure the ensemble sustains the whole note until the bass plays the last pizzicato note.
