PROGRAM NOTES:
"Right-of-Way" (pronounced "right-a-way") is based around a fun, light piano melody I wrote when I was 11 years old in Wilton, outside of Saratoga Springs, New York in our Loughberry neighborhood. I only had a raw recording and memory of the short piano piece I made in 2009 to go off of when revisiting this melody today.
There's a trail (hopefully still is) a few hundred feet from my childhood home that, somewhere along the neighborhood line, came to be known as the "right-of-way". Running, biking, and playing along wildlife, blackberry bushes (as well as ticks), and stark high-voltage lines (this trail leads to far more interesting paths around the neighborhood), was a frequent occurrence. No doubt the soundtracks from then-popular Nintendo® video games influenced my writing at the time. There are dozens of other crude piano pieces like this that I recorded as a child - I feel ready to revisit and shape them into something more developed with my current style, like I did here (this piece is from my "Loughberry Series"; a collection of works that uses original pieces from my childhood).
