Key: Bb major.

This simple warm-up for Beginning Band is designed to be used as soon as the first five pitches in Bb Concert are introduced. Each line should thereafter be added as soon as the rhythm is introduced in the method book. The teacher should have the students write in the counts under one or two measures of each line, using his or her own counting system, and use directional up-down arrows above the line to indicate the foot taps. If using in a mixed instrument class, it is helpful to relate the solfege syllables sol-do to the note names (these can be written above each measure on the whole note line). Since each new rhythm uses the same five familiar pitches, students can concentrate on counting and decoding the new rhythms. Every day they are reinforcing previous learning by progressing from familiar to more unfamiliar rhythms. As soon as students are accurately counting and producing eighth notes, the dotted-quarter eighth can be introduced. By combining the eighth note and dotted quarter-note lines, students can learn to respond to the questions, "How long is a dotted-quarter note?" (one-and-a-half beats), and, "A dotted quarter-note is equal to how many eighth notes?" (three). Using this method, many holiday tunes with this rhythm can be accurately played by December! Once students are familiar with this method of rhythm-reading, the teacher can adapt the Rhythmic Warm-up to any other meter as it is introduced. This simple warm-up technique creates a structured expectation for the beginning of each class prior to the introduction of scales and lip slurs. It teaches students to decode rhythms in a consistent way so as to encourage accurate sight-reading.
