Sequeira Costa a legend among pianists. In 1951 Sequeira Costa was honored with the Grand Prix de Paris at the Marguerite Long International Competition. Since receiving that momentous honor, he has played an important role in music history in our time. Dimitri Shostakovich invited Sequeira Costa to join a distinguished body of jurors which included Sviastoslav Richter, Dimitri Kabalevsky, Aran Khachaturian and Emil Gilels for the First International Tchaikovsky Piano Competition in Moscow. As the youngest member of this prestigious jury, he was only a few years older than Van Cliburn, the winner of the competition. Sequeira Costa belongs to an almost forgotten generation of artists representing the great romantic traditions of the 19th Century. His first teacher, Jose Vianna da Motta, was a pupil of the legendary composer/pianist, Franz Liszt. Seguira Costa's teachers following Jose Vianna da Motta count among the greatest pianists of the age. Among these Edwin Fischer, Jacques Fevrier and Marguerite Long have made of him one of the great pianists of our time. Following Sequeira Costa's performance in Weimar, the Thueringer Allgemeine Zeitung said of him that his programming betrayed a "genuinely personal biography of sound". Sequeira Costa brings to every performance a wide range of timbre and an amazing virtuosity but also a sensitiveness to the wishes of the composer seldom experienced from the new generation of virtuosos. These characteristics plus his silken phrasing and crystalline tone have made of him a keyboard legend.
