The emotions of the text shape the music, as in an Art Song. The vocal parts often stagger their entries and overlap in canonic and fugal ways. There are gentle dissonances between the vocal parts and the piano. Overall, the style is Early 20th Century, reminiscent of the French composers known as Les Six (Poulenc, Milhaud, Honneger, Durey, Tailleferre, and Auric.) Marked "expressive and fervent" this piece is both beautiful and powerful, and equally qualified for either the church or the concert stage.
