Despite the primacy of Italian opera in nineteenth-century Portugal, pioneering instrumentalists did emerge. Both Guilherme Daddi and Jose Viana de Mota were piano prodigies and both did much to advance the cause of concert life in their native country. Both wrote virtuosic and entertaining pieces, successfully bringing Portugal into the fold of wider European music-making.
