Polyphonic Variations is a fugue whose single theme is stated in a double exposition: one in pizzicato, the other in arco. In fact, a multiplicity of bowing styles makes this a superlative teaching piece. The trumpet part is quite easy (range is only a fifth, A-E in the staff) and can be performed by a younger performer. Rhythmic precision and growing intensity will sell this work to your audience. It is a great exercise in ensemble playing, counting and building excitement!
