They're great for use in practicing sight-reading but can also be applied to any exercise that you're working on that would benefit from some general reading materials.
Thiscollection presents its user with a series of notes on a treble staff withno rhythmic value and no meter. Chapters are organized by theplacement of the notes on the staff (on the staff, above the staff,below the staff, and in various combinations of these ranges) as wellas into diatonic and chromatic note collections.
Bypresenting these notes without any reference to rhythm or meter thehope is to allow the user to focus specifically on developing theskill of reading notes in various locations relative to the staffwithout having the distraction of rhythmic values or time signatures.
Thediatonic sets present notes with no accidentals or key signature.These collections can be read as written (as if in C major, usingonly the “white notes”), or in any of the 15 key signatures from7 flats to 7 sharps simply by imagining—or pencilling-in if thatworks better for you—a key signature at the beginning of the staffand playing the notes as indicated by that key signature.
Chromaticcollections include sharp and flat notes as well as natural ones.These are especially challenging due to the frequent inclusion of E-and B-sharps as well as C- and F-flats.
Myhope is that enough exercises have been given in each chapter to makeit such that by the time the user gets to the end of a chapter theycan return to the beginning of that chapter having forgotten theexercises to the point that it feels as though they are reading themfor the first time. It is encouraged to cycle through exercisesquickly, rather than dwelling on a particular exercise for a longperiod of time, to avoid learning the exercises. The goal is not tolearn the notes but to develop the skill of reading the notes.
Somesuggestions for how to use this book include:
Simply playing the notes on one’s instrument in no particular rhythm or tempo. A greater challenge can be achieved by playing them at a steady speed; faster speeds create more challenging exercises.
Playing diatonic collections in all 15 key signatures.
Print sheets for younger students to write in note names for practice reading notes on, above, or below the staff. More advanced theory students can do the same exercise but in different keys to practice memorizing their key signatures.
Advanced theory students and improvising musicians can also use these exercises to practice identifying scale degrees in various keys. This would be a great ear-training exercise as well as a great theory tool.
Improvisers could improvise a harmony for these “melodies.”
Chapters with wide ranges can present a challenging exercise for musicians who play instruments where large leaps are a challenge. Mallet percussion, strings, piano (one hand at a time), woodwinds, brass players, etc. would benefit from these awkward leaps and falls.
Aswith any of the Dots and Beams books, the uses for this particularcollection are limited only by the imagination of the musician usingit. I highly encourage anybody using this book to find as many usesfor this book as possible. My hope is that as you grow as a musicianyou will find ever more creative and challenging ways to use thesematerials so that you can return to these books for years and stillfind a valuable way to use them.
