Pentecost Cantata was commissioned by West Virginia Wesleyan College on the occasion of the Centennial of its founding in 1890. The composer conducted the premiere on 10 May 1991. The text was selected by Dr. Pinkham from a variety of sources. The opening movement is a setting of the Whitsunday Antiphon for Matins. The Hymn is an English paraphrase of the Latin Veni Creator Spiritus. John Dryden made the translation in 1693. The Lesson is a setting of the account as recorded in Acts 2. The concluding movement is a setting of the Whitsunday Antiphon for Second Vespers. This piece is appropriate for both liturgical and concert use.
