Treble Clef Edition Only
Please note that even though Patterns For Improvisation is categorized as Treble Clef Music and Bass Clef Music, this particular product is only in treble clef. I was hoping for a bass clef edition, but will work out of treble clef...

Excellent book
If you are late intermediate or above and want to get a feel for jazz piano, Abersold's series are a good place to start. The patterns in this book provide a good base of jazz 'ideas' (both rhythm and structure). Jazz has a feel to it that is much different than anything we learn using the standard piano methods generally available. Getting the feel of jazz is often more difficult than any other part of the learning process....which makes books such as this (and the Jazz Hanon)...so valuable. As mentioned by one other reviewer, this book does not provide a lot of guidance as to WHEN you you use these patterns ...(that would be another entire book in itself)...but my personal opinion is that folks try to figure out jazz arrangements too early in the process and would be better served spending time early one simply learning the building blocks...(patterns, riffs, and those big spread out chords). This book helps do that.

One of the Best
I own the original publication. My copy is more than 40 years old and is in really poor shape. We are so lucky that Jamey Aebersold is republishing this now. It is the very best book of scale studies on the market today. Oliver Nelson was a musical genius. There is no baloney theory, just concentrated scale and chord progression studies that are superb for speed, ear training or just plain limbering up. This book is a great addition to your Jazz music studies program.
