This duet was written as my first experiment in bitonality. The title of the piece is simply an inversion of the word "ostinato." The beginning ostinato in the cello is a rhythmic diminution of the famous Pachelbel Canon in D. To make it a little more distinct, it is also written in d natural minor. The contrasting melodic material is set in Bb major. I find that this triadic relationship makes for pleasing and interesting combinations of dissonances and consonances.
