Ory's Creole Trombone is a fun and amusing piece by early New Orleans jazz trombonist Kid Ory, first recorded by his group in 1921 or '22 and subsequently becoming an early jazz standard, including being recorded by Louis Armstrong. The piece draws heavily on Ragtime and accordingly can be played with straight quavers, or a combination of straight and swung feels.

This arrangement is designed to be playable by 4 trombonists (1 bass trombone, or tuba) at an early intermediate to intermediate level. Ranges are modest, allowing players to focus on developing their feel for syncopation, and have fun with the raucous slide glissandi that are the hallmark of the tune.

This arrangement lasts approximately 1m30s at the marked tempo, but can equally be played a little slower or faster.

Although written for trombones, this quartet would be suitable for many configurations of non-transposing bass clef instruments including bassoons and cellos.

James Brady is a composer, arranger and brass player from the UK with an MA (Hons) in Music from the University of Cambridge, a MMus in Jazz Trumpet Performance from the Guildhall School of Music and a PGCert in Performance Teaching from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. James is an active music educator in the UK, with roles including Director of Jazz at East London Community Band and Visiting Teacher of Brass and Jazz at Hockerill Anglo-European College and Bedford Girls' School. As well as working with organisations including the Royal Opera House, London Chamber Orchestra and the Sage Gateshead, his compositions and arrangements have been performed by the likes of Kate Nash and the Wilderness Orchestra, award-winning jazz vocalist Liane Carroll and the Guildhall Jazz Band.
