Oratorio de Noel, Op. 12 Bearbeitung fur Soli, Chor und Orgel by Camille Saint-Saens Mixed Choir - Sheet Music

By Camille Saint-Saens

Owing to its Latin text, Saint-Saëns’ Christmas Oratorio has found admirers all over the world. Saint-Saëns avoids theatrical effects in his church music and relies almost entirely on homophonic choral writing. Here the operatic allusions so popular in his day have given way to a mixture of romantic lan and reminiscences of the Baroque. The subtitle reads “ dans le style de J. S. Bach” although the composer was unaware of Bach’s Christmas Oratorio. In this unusual form the oratorio, of which the final movement is already a hit with many choruses, is well-suited for performance during the Advent and Christmas seasons, providing a welcome change from Bach.

Saint-Saens is making a comeback

This little, orchestral score for 4 voices and soloist is a fun, neat Noel for the Christmas season just passed. The music is typical French music of the Belle Epoque and Saint-Saens does the original Latin text justice with his very creative, modern score. I recommend this book for any choir director, organist, or music director looking for something a little different to play at Advent/Christmas-time other than the very good, but typical Messiah fare.
