What fun to sit down to a harp for the first time be able to master at least one tune on it, especially one you already know and love. This book has been compiled to give the beginner musical material of permanent value in simple form. Although this book is not intended to be a method for the harp, it assumes a working knowledge of the essentials of music. Some information about the instrument, as well as the correct position of the body, arms, hands, and fingers in performance is necessary to insure against errors in posture and technique that would handicap the player in progressing to more advanced work later on.

This book has been around FOREVER! And there is a reason for it. Starting with one line melodies, and clear directions for lifting and placing, Dilling's book adds ONE element in each piece to bring a young (or old!) harpist to an intermediate level by book's end, while...

playing pieces that are fun and familiar, introducing various keys one at a time. Workable for both pedal and lever harp. While one 'could' teach one's self with this book, it would be very (!) helpful to work with a teacher in your area (or online with a world-class harpist using this book as her teaching text- as I have done) to get the foundational elements of good harp technique at the beginning, to avoid 'crab' hands, injury, and amateur 'plucking' technique. If one wants to add a 'technical' exercise book with this text, Deborah Friou's "Harp Exercises for Agility and Speed' would be a nice package combo.
