There are many arrangements of this beautiful folk song. Most versions are found in common time. This one is in triple meter. This meter creates a beautiful, flowing movement to this work. One of the many stories accompanying this song goes like this. A trapper falls in love with the American Indian chief's daughter, Shenandoah. (In other stories, Shenandoah is the name of the American Indian chief.) The trapper must leave, crossing the wide Missouri, but in his mind he hears her calling. In another of the many versions, he's gone for seven years before coming back. He tricks the American Indian chief and "steals" Shenandoah, taking her across the wide Missouri. No matter what the story might be, this beautiful song may call forth many images, helping you create your own story.Sing this song with a beautiful tone quality. Be sure to take in lots of air so you can sing the long phrases. Each voice part has melodic lines to sing and each voice part must express its melody with tenderness, gentleness and emotion. Let the motion of the musical line determine the sense of rubato and the dynamic level. Listen carefully for blend and balance. Work forbeautiful, pure vowel sounds and liquid consonants. Your consonants should be energized, but you may want to remove the percussiveness found in most vocal presentations. Play with the sounds and the tempi. You may have a beautiful musical experience with this setting.
