In verse 2 the lyrics suggest that it is Mary singing to the baby Jesus until the line "But they went to the inn nearby" Finally the listener realizes that she is singing to her child who has been killed in Herod's massacre of the innocents. Haunting melody which for some inexplicable reason is very popular in schools.
