This holiday favorite for instrumental solo is scored with an interesting band accompaniment and your choice of solo parts for clarinet/tenor saxophone, alto saxophone, B-flat trumpet, F horn, treble clef baritone, and bass clef baritone/trombone. After stating the melody, the soloist plays an obbligato countermelody above the band's melodic statement. There is a short cadenza at the end that will be very accessible to the accomplished high school musician. For added color, two or three different instruments could play the solo part at various times throughout the song. This is a wonderful tune to feature one or more of your best students.
